Project Description

cecilia-Metella

The Appian Way

Duration: approximately 3 hours

Visited sites: the tomb of Cecilia Metella, the Circus of Maxentius, the villa of Campo Bove, the catacombs of San Sebastiano.

The oldest of the Roman consular roads, and the one where the “elegant” graves were found. There, a few steps from the city-center, you will be immersed in the peaceful greenery, among ancient ruins and celebrity villas, such as Gina Lollobrigida’s.

We will visit the tomb of Cecilia Metella, a young aristocrat whose name has become famous and whose biography is unknown; this mighty monument was transformed into a fortress by the family of a Pope in the Middle Ages. Nearby, we will take a look at the foundation ruins (that is, do not expect to see the façade or the walls) of a large villa, with mosaics and a thermal system; later, we will see a roofless church. Then, we will continue to the Circus of Maxentius and the mausoleum that this emperor erected when his young son died. We will end our tour with the Catacombs, to better understand the early Christians.
