The Palaces of Princes

Sites visited: Colonna Palace or Palazzo Doria Pamphili, the stately homes where Roman princes still currently live

Duration: 2h

Roman princes sometimes still live in grand, 400 room, palaces. The Colonna family owns the most sumptuous, where they have lived for eight centuries. The Gallery dwarfs any royal palace and houses an exceptional collection of art (Veronese, Bronzino, etc). Of course, in order to have amassed all this wealth, they must have had (at least) one Pope in the family.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about a lifestyle that has disappeared in most European countries. The wealth beyond measure of the almighty aristocracy. In the same building, we will then visit the Apartment of the Princess. Grandmother of the current owner, and a woman with lots of character, she had this cluster of rooms painted by the best artists such as, for example, Pinturicchio, restored. Thus, you will glimpse into the intimate life of one of the most prominent families of Europe. The two videos will allow you to have an idea of the treasures that have been preserved for centuries and are now accessible to all.

As an alternative to the Palazzo Colonna, I suggest the Palazzo Doria Pamphili, which is very close. Beyond the art collection, including works by Caravaggio, Raphael Velasquez and others, the rooms themselves are extraordinary. When the Panphili family hosted the Emperor of Germany there, he said that he would never dare to invite the Panphili family to his residence in Berlin because, by comparison, it was too modest!
